How to read the forecast

Fixed grammar, always the same order, like the sea version: volume as force 0–9 (each water measured against its own five-year history — force 9 means the week sits in the top tenth of everything that water has done in five years); movement from the four-week trend; pressure is the rescue rate, read like a barometer; visibility is how much of the water can be identified against the record. A water with too few reports says no reports — the forecast never says anything small enough to point at a person.

Every issue ends with probabilities for the coming week, and every probability is graded once the week arrives. The running Brier score is 0.134 across 70 graded predictions — 0.25 is coin-flip forecasting; 0 is prophecy. The grades live in the open: verification.json.

What is the Albuquerque Book Forecast?

A weekly report on the flow of books through one city’s donation stream, written in the fixed grammar of the maritime shipping forecast. Every line is a real measurement from a five-year, 447,734-item scan record — volume as force 0-9, movement, pressure (the rescue rate), visibility (how much of the water is identifiable).

Is it really a forecast?

Yes — each issue predicts the coming week’s conditions with probabilities, and every prediction is graded in public once the week arrives. The running Brier score is published; 0.25 is coin-flip forecasting, lower is better.

Can the forecast reveal whose books were donated?

No. Waters are broad categories, any water with too few reports says ‘no reports’, and issues carry force scales and rates rather than raw counts. No donors, no estates, no addresses — the weather, not the weather-makers.
