Donate a Rare or Valuable Book Collection in Albuquerque
If you are holding something special — signed firsts, fine bindings, a deep New Mexico library — we would genuinely love to receive it, and we will come to you.
Most of the books we take in are everyday reading copies, and we are glad to have them. But every so often a collection comes along with real rarity in it — and those deserve a different conversation.
If you have inherited a serious library, you are downsizing decades of careful collecting, or you simply know that some of what is on your shelves is uncommon, you have two honest paths: sell it piece by piece, or place the whole collection somewhere it will be understood and cared for. If the second one appeals to you more, that is exactly what we do — and we would be glad to take it off your hands.
What makes a collection rare or valuable
You do not need to be certain — a few photos of the spines and any signed pieces are enough for us to tell. But these are the things that tend to matter:
- •Signed or inscribed first editions — author signatures, inscriptions, and association copies.
- •True first printings of major authors — see our first edition identification guide.
- •Fine and leather bindings, private-press work, and limited editions.
- •Antiquarian volumes — especially early New Mexico and Southwest imprints.
- •Deep regional libraries — New Mexico authors, Southwest history, Pueblo and Hispano scholarship. Our New Mexico Literary Atlas and author collecting guides map the names that matter.
- •Complete runs and matched sets that are worth far more whole than split apart.
Why donate a collection like this
The collection stays whole
A library built over a lifetime tells a story together. We keep it intact rather than scattering it across a hundred buyers.
We know what we are looking at
With a background in appraisal and first-edition identification, we recognize the pieces that matter — nothing valuable gets treated as ordinary.
We do all the work
We pack, lift, and carry everything out, and we are careful with the special pieces. You do not box or sort a thing.
The books do real good
Collectible pieces fund the work; everyday books go to readers — hospital wards, care homes, small-town school libraries, hospice shelves.
The honest part
We are a for-profit business, not a charity, so a donation is not tax-deductible — we would rather tell you that plainly than dress it up. What you get instead is the easiest possible exit for a collection: no listing, no shipping, no auction fees, no months of waiting.
If you would rather sell, that is a fair choice, and our sister service SellBooksABQ can give you an honest read on a collection worth selling. For most whole collections, though, donating is simpler — and the books end up somewhere they are valued.
How it works
- 1Text or call 702-496-4214. A few photos of the shelves and any signed or unusual pieces help us plan.
- 2We talk it through and set a time that works — including evenings and weekends.
- 3We come and collect it, packing and carrying everything ourselves, careful with the special pieces. For a standout collection we will travel well beyond the metro.
- 4The books find their place — collectible pieces fund the work, everyday books go to readers across New Mexico.
Questions
What counts as a rare or valuable collection?
Signed or inscribed first editions, true first printings of major authors, fine and leather bindings, private-press work, antiquarian volumes (especially early New Mexico and Southwest imprints), association copies, complete runs or sets, and deep regional libraries. If you are not sure, a few photos are enough for us to tell.
Do you really come and collect the whole collection?
Yes. Free pickup covers the Albuquerque metro and the central corridor (Santa Fe, Los Lunas, Belen, the East Mountains, Grants, Socorro), and for a genuinely standout collection we will travel well beyond that. We do all the packing and lifting.
Is donating a rare collection tax-deductible?
No — NMLP is a for-profit business, so donations are not tax-deductible. Most people who donate a whole collection do it for the ease and to see the books cared for.
What if I am not sure what it is worth?
That is exactly what we are good at. With a background in book appraisal and first-edition identification, we recognize the pieces that matter so nothing valuable is treated as ordinary. Send a few photos and we will tell you what you have.
What if I would rather sell it?
A fair choice. Our sister service SellBooksABQ can give you an honest read. For most whole collections, donating is simpler and faster than months of listing, shipping, and fees.
Have a collection worth a careful hand?
Send a few photos or just tell us what you have. We will take it from there.
