Philip St. George Cooke (1809-1895) was a career army officer of the frontier West, and in 1846 and 1847 he led the Mormon Battalion from Santa Fe across southern New Mexico to California, opening a wagon road on the way; Cooke's Peak and Cooke's Spring in Luna County carry his name. Otis E. Young of Bradley University, the author of The First Military Escort on the Santa Fé Trail, 1829, wrote this biography.

This copy is the 1955 edition from The Arthur H. Clark Company of Glendale, California, Volume V of its Western Frontiersman Series, in red cloth with untrimmed page edges and a frontispiece portrait of Cooke.
