Zebulon Montgomery Pike's expedition of 1806 and 1807 took him across the plains to the Rocky Mountains and, after Spanish troops found his party in the upper Rio Grande valley, south to Santa Fe and Chihuahua. His account, first printed in Philadelphia in 1810, was among the first American descriptions of Spanish New Mexico.
This volume is the 1925 Lakeside Classic, one of the small annual Christmas books R. R. Donnelley & Sons issued from the Lakeside Press in Chicago, edited by Milo Milton Quaife of the Burton Historical Collection. It covers the southwestern expedition, with a frontispiece portrait and a map, and a printed tissue guard credits the portrait to the Philadelphia 1810 edition of Pike's journal.
Lakeside Classics, Christmas 1925
The title page reads 'The Lakeside Classics' and 'The Lakeside Press, Chicago, R. R. Donnelley & Sons Company, Christmas, MCMXXV.' The tissue guard over the frontispiece says the portrait is reproduced from the Philadelphia 1810 edition of Pike's journal; this is a 1925 edition, not the 1810 first.
