Ralph Emerson Twitchell, a Santa Fe attorney and historian, published The Leading Facts of New Mexican History in five volumes from the Torch Press in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, between 1911 and 1917, and it has long been the encyclopedic reference for the territorial era. Sunstone Press of Santa Fe reissued the first two volumes as facsimiles in its Southwest Heritage Series, with a new foreword by the historian Richard Melzer.

The title pages state the source of each facsimile: Volume I reproduces number 1156 of the original 1911 edition, and Volume II the original 1912 edition. The copyright page claims only the new material, dated 2007. Note the title, too: New Mexican History, not New Mexico History.
