Gaspar Pérez de Villagrá marched with Juan de Oñate's colonizing expedition of 1598 and told its story, the Acoma campaign included, in an epic poem printed in Spain in 1610. This critical and annotated edition from the University of New Mexico Press sets the Spanish text beside an English translation by Miguel Encinias, Alfred Rodríguez and Joseph P. Sánchez, in the Pasó por Aquí series on the Nuevomexicano literary heritage edited by Genaro M. Padilla and Erlinda Gonzales-Berry.
A reproduction of Villagrá's portrait from the 1610 edition, courtesy of the UNM General Library's Center for Southwest Research, faces the title page, and the book reproduces Enrico Martínez's early map of New Mexico and the Great Plains. The copyright page is a clean lesson in number lines: the cataloging data says 1st ed., but the line starts at 2, so this copy is a 2004 second printing.
First edition, second printing (2004)
The copyright page reads '© 1992 by the University of New Mexico Press' with the number line '08 07 06 05 04 2 3 4 5 6.' The lowest number is 2 and the lowest year is 04, so this is the second printing, from 2004, even though the cataloging data calls it the 1st ed. This is a University of New Mexico Press book; see how University of New Mexico Press states its first printings.
