Diego Dionisio de Peñalosa was named governor of New Mexico in 1661 and deposed in 1664 on charges brought by the Inquisition. This narrative, credited to Father Nicholas de Freytas, describes an expedition from Santa Fe to Quivira under Peñalosa. Gilberto Espinosa's foreword to this edition explains that Peñalosa later tried to interest England and then France in a conquest of New Mexico, that the Freytas account was apparently used as secret propaganda, and that it actually resulted in La Salle's voyage and expedition.

John Gilmary Shea, the Catholic historian, published the account in 1882 with an English translation of the Spanish original. This is the 1964 Horn and Wallace facsimile from Albuquerque, printing the Spanish text and the English translation, with Espinosa's foreword.
