In December 1853 Major James Henry Carleton rode southeast out of Albuquerque at the head of a squadron of cavalry, sent against the Apaches, and on the way visited the ruins of the old Spanish missions at Abó, Quarai and Gran Quivira. His diary of the march is one of the earliest full descriptions of the three sites, which are now the units of Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument. Carleton later commanded the California Column and the Department of New Mexico.
Jack D. Rittenhouse issued this edition from his Stagecoach Press in Santa Fe in 1965 as Number 1 of the press's Southwestern Series, limited to 750 copies, with a plan of the Gran Quivira ruins facing the title page. The publisher's foreword traces the text to the Smithsonian Institution's Ninth Annual Report of 1855.

The copyright page reads 'Copyright 1965 by Jack D. Rittenhouse' and 'First Stagecoach Press Printing,' and the limitation page reads 'Stagecoach Press Southwestern Series, Number 1.
