Lar Hothem's guide surveys American Indian smoking pipes by material and form: catlinite, steatite and pipestone pipes, pottery pipes, effigy pipes, Plains, Cherokee, Iroquois and Mississippian pipes, disc and tubular pipes, trade pipes and pipe-tomahawks. Its closing chapters cover what to look for in collecting pipes and how to spot fakes, and color photographs of pipes from gallery and private collections run through the book.
