James A. McKenna, known in the mining camps as Uncle Jimmie, prospected the Black Range and the Gila country of southwestern New Mexico, and Black Range Tales is his own account of those years: strikes and busts, Apache fights, and the camps around Hillsboro. The title page credits an introduction by Shane Leslie and woodcuts by Howard Simon, and the book was first published in 1936.
This copy is the Rio Grande Press edition from Glorieta. The publisher's preface, dated July 1969, says the press first reprinted the book in May 1965 and later added a new introduction by Lydia G. Key of the Black Range Museum in Hillsboro, calling the result its second edition of Black Range Tales and the third edition of the title. The copyright page dates this copy to the eighth printing, 1981, and the endpapers reproduce a Ghost Town Map of New Mexico by Lucien A. File of the New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Mineral Resources.
Eighth printing, 1981 (Rio Grande Press)
The copyright page reads 'A Rio Grande Classic, First published in 1936' and '8th Printing 1981' under The Rio Grande Press, Inc., Glorieta, New Mexico imprint. A late printing of the Rio Grande Press reissue, not the 1936 first.
