- Under the Sea-Wind — 1941 · Simon & SchusterBlue-gray linen boards with gilt bird stamping to the front and a tan cloth spine bearing a blue paper label with gilt lettering; eight full-page illustrations by Howard Frech; first-state dust jacket with the original price on the front flap. Carson's scarce first book. US Simon & Schuster (New York) is the true first, published November 1941. The later Oxford reissue is 'first thus,' not the true first. Simon & Schuster never reprinted the original 1941 edition, so it is genuinely scarce; the far more common Oxford reissue is not the true first.

The copyright page reads 'Copyright 1950, 1951 by Rachel L. Carson / Printed in the United States of America' with no printing number stated. The first-state binding is a dull (non-glossy) paper…. The US Oxford University Press (New York) edition is the true first, published 2 July 1951; it won the 1952 National Book Award for Nonfiction and the John Burroughs Medal. A UK Staples Press edition also appeared in 1951. The book went through many printings within months. The first printing must lack any printing number on the copyright page; later Oxford printings state the printing number above the copyright notice. US Houghton Mifflin, Boston, 1962 is the true first, preceding the UK Hamish Hamilton edition. The text first appeared serialized in The New Yorker in June 1962 (three parts) before book publication; the Houghton Mifflin volume is the first appearance in book form. The 1962 Book-of-the-Month Club issue looks nearly identical but does NOT state 'First Printing' on the copyright page, carries a blind Book-of-the-Month Club stamp (a small dot/indentation) in the lower corner of the rear board, and has an unpriced jacket (no printed price at the flap).
