Stephenson's debut; there was no hardcover. The US Vintage Books trade paperback original (1984) is the true first and is scarce; there was no first hardcover. It went out of print and was not reprinted until the 2001 Perennial reissue. The 2001 Perennial reissue is clearly marked and is not the first; some first-printing copies carry a remainder mark to the bottom edge, which does not affect first-edition status.
