Illustrated throughout by Hudson Talbott in mixed-media art combining painting, fabric, and collage. The true-first dust jacket bears NO Newbery Honor seal, since the honor was not announced until January 2006; a genuine first-printing jacket also retains…. The US G.P. Putnam's Sons edition of 2005 is the true first. It was named a Newbery Honor Book in January 2006, unusually for a picture book, so the true-first jacket and text block predate the seal. Later printings add the silver Newbery Honor seal to the jacket and drop the low digits from the number line; book-club and later trade states can be told apart by the presence of the seal.
Brown Girl Dreaming — 2014 · Nancy Paulsen BooksFirst printing carries a number line including 1; Nancy Paulsen Books imprint; memoir-in-verse, brown cloth lettered in gilt. True first jacket has no Coretta Scott King, National Book Award, or Newbery Honor seal. The US Penguin / Nancy Paulsen Books 2014 edition (published August 2014) is the true first. It won the 2014 National Book Award for Young People's Literature and the 2015 Coretta Scott King Author Award, and is a 2015 Newbery Honor book, so the true-first jacket predates those seals. Later printings add award seals to the jacket; book-club editions are unpriced.
