Summer Reading Swap: Donate and Make Room

Clear out books you've read and make space for new summer reads

Published March 21, 2026 By Josh Eldred

Summer is reading season. With school out, vacations planned, and long warm evenings, people read more during June, July, and August than almost any other time of year. Beach trips, poolside lounging, road trips, and lazy afternoons all call for good books.

But summer also creates a unique challenge: you're burning through your reading list fast. Books you've finished pile up, and your shelves get crowded. Meanwhile, summer is also moving season. Many families relocate for jobs, larger homes, or new opportunities during summer break.

This is the perfect time to donate books. Clear out what you've already read and make room for new summer selections. Moving, reorganizing, or just drowning in finished reads — donation is the same solution for all three situations.

Summer Reading Creates Natural Turnover

People read faster in summer. When it's 100 degrees outside and you're seeking refuge in the pool or shade, a good book moves quickly. By mid-August, that summer reading list has become a pile of finished books taking up shelf space.

The finished books served their purpose. They provided entertainment, escape, and enjoyment during the hot months. Now they're ready to move on to the next reader. Donation gives them a new home while freeing up your space.

Children's Summer Reading Programs

Summer reading programs for kids change every year. Albuquerque schools and libraries update their recommended reading lists annually. Books that were perfect for your child's summer reading last year may not be on this year's list.

Instead of storing complete sets of last year's summer reads, donate them. Kids' books go to other young readers. The ones from completed summer reading programs still have value for families starting their reading journey or for different age groups.

I sort, price, and get books into the hands of readers who want them. Children's books donated in summer quickly find their way to homes, classrooms, and community centers where children are reading.

Summer Moving Season Book Donations

June, July, and August see the highest volume of residential moves in Albuquerque. When you're packing up a house, books become a major challenge. They're heavy, they take up significant space, and moving them is expensive. Many families lighten their load by donating books before a move.

If you're moving this summer, donation makes logistics simpler. You reduce the volume of items to pack and move. You lighten the weight in your moving truck. And you know the books are going to good use rather than being forced into boxes you hope you'll have space for in a new home.

Common Questions

When is the best time for summer book donations?

June and July are ideal. Summer is reading season when people finish books faster. It's also moving season for many families. Kids' summer reading lists change yearly, so last year's books are ready to move on.

Can I donate children's summer reading books?

Yes, absolutely. Kids' summer reading programs change each year. If your child completed their summer list, those books can go to other young readers. I accept all children's and young adult titles.

Can I donate books I've already read?

Of course. If a book is readable with intact pages and cover, it's good to donate. I put usable books back into the community through resale and free giveaways so they reach readers who want them.
