What this book is

The San Luis Valley is the high-desert basin straddling the southern Colorado / northern New Mexico border, bounded by the Sangre de Cristo Mountains on the east and the San Juan Mountains on the west, with the Rio Grande running south through its middle. Its principal towns are Alamosa, Monte Vista, and Crestone on the Colorado side; Antonito, San Luis, and the small communities of Costilla and Taos County edges on the New Mexico side. Beginning in the 1960s the valley became a sustained reporting cluster for cattle mutilations, anomalous lights, and other unexplained phenomena, with serious local-press coverage from the Crestone Eagle, the Valley Courier, and the Pueblo Chieftain. By the mid-1990s the valley had developed a national reputation as the most active "anomaly hot zone" in the continental United States.

Christopher O'Brien moved to the Crestone-Baca area of the San Luis Valley in 1989. He spent the next seven years documenting what he and his neighbors observed and reported, building a local-records database, conducting first-person interviews, and ultimately compiling the material into The Mysterious Valley, the first nationally-distributed book on the topic. St. Martin's Press picked it up for the popular paperback line and the September 1996 first edition is the artifact in this archive entry.

The book is structured as a chronicle: introduction to the valley's geography and history, a survey of pre-1989 reports on the region (going back to Indigenous oral tradition and 19th-century settler accounts), and then a year-by-year reportorial account of the 1989–1996 period during which O'Brien lived there. Subjects include the high-frequency unexplained-light cluster around Crestone and the Baca, the ongoing cattle-mutilation phenomenon (which O'Brien tracks site by site with the involvement of regional law enforcement), reports of unusual ground-rumbling noises, the Bishop crystal skull discovery, and the social and cultural dynamics of how a rural community processed these reports.

The cover note "AS SEEN ON SIGHTINGS AND THE TNT SPECIAL UFO'S: INTERRUPTED LIVES" reflects the book's emergence into national popular consciousness via 1990s syndicated television. Sightings (the Tim White-hosted paranormal-investigation series that began on Fox in 1991 and ran in first-run syndication through the mid-1990s) covered O'Brien and the San Luis Valley reports in multiple episodes; the TNT documentary UFO's: Interrupted Lives aired in 1995. O'Brien later went on to become a regular field investigator on the History Channel's UFO Hunters series (2008–2009) and to publish two follow-up volumes (Enter the Valley, 1999, and Stalking the Tricksters, 2000).

Why this copy matters

Mass-market paperbacks of this vintage are also subject to the "stripped book" disposal pattern noted on the copyright page: when unsold copies didn't move at retail, the front cover was stripped and returned for credit while the rest of the book was destroyed. Surviving complete first-edition copies in clean condition are increasingly hard to find as a result.
