I accept vinyl records as part of any book or media donation — LPs, 45s, 78s, picture discs, box sets, and even damaged records. Vinyl gets evaluated separately from books because the collector market for individual records can be substantial, and I want to make sure nothing valuable gets lost in the shuffle.
What Vinyl I Accept
Everything. I take entire record collections regardless of genre, era, or condition. Whether you have a careful audiophile collection in pristine sleeves or a dusty crate of records from a garage, I want them. Common categories I see from Albuquerque donors include classic rock, country, jazz, classical, easy listening, Latin and regional Southwest recordings, gospel, R&B, soul, funk, disco, hip-hop, and spoken word.
Categories with Collector Value
I evaluate every record individually rather than treating collections as bulk donations. Categories that frequently route to specialty resale channels include:
- Classic rock first pressings — Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, Floyd, Hendrix, and other major artists where pressing details determine value
- Jazz blue-note originals and other label-original jazz pressings — deep-groove Blue Notes, Prestige, Riverside, and Impulse originals can be worth hundreds each
- Regional Latino-label releases — Hurricane Records, Discos MM, Norteno and Tejano labels. These are especially common in Albuquerque donations and have an active collector market
- Classical complete sets in original boxes — Solti Wagner Ring, Karajan complete cycles, and other multi-disc classical collections in good condition
- Original Broadway cast recordings from significant productions, especially early pressings
- Punk, new wave, and indie pressings from the late 1970s through 1990s — small-label runs with limited quantities are increasingly collectible
What Happens to Common Records
Mass-market commercial pop, mid-century easy listening, Christmas compilations, and damaged vinyl are not worthless — they just route differently. I pass these along to Albuquerque-area DJs, collectors who run their own resale operations, garage-sale lot buyers, and craft artists who use vinyl in projects. The point is that nothing you donate gets thrown away. Every record finds a destination.
How Vinyl Pickup Works
Call or text me at 702-496-4214 and mention that you have records along with your books. I pick up vinyl the same way I pick up books — free, at your home, anywhere in the Albuquerque metro and statewide. Records are heavy and awkward to move, so I bring my own boxes and packing materials if needed. If you have a large collection (several hundred records or more), let me know in advance so I can plan the vehicle space.
You can also drop off records at the 24/7 outdoor donation box at 5445 Edith Blvd NE, Unit A. If you are dropping off a large number, please stack them vertically rather than flat to prevent warping and ring wear on the jackets.
Frequently Asked Questions — Vinyl Record Donations
Do you only take records that come with book donations?
No. I will pick up a record-only donation. Books and records just happen to come together in most estate cleanouts and downsizing situations, which is why I mention them together. If you have 200 records and zero books, I still want them.
Should I clean or sort the records before you pick them up?
No need. I sort and evaluate everything at my warehouse. If records are already in sleeves and organized, that is great, but it is not required. Loose records, records without jackets, and records in rough shape are all accepted.
What if I think I have something really valuable?
If you suspect you have rare records — first pressings of major albums, sealed copies, or unusual regional releases — you are welcome to set those aside and research them yourself before donating. I am honest about this: if a record is worth significant money, I want you to know that before it leaves your house. Call me at 702-496-4214 and I can give you a general sense of what to look for.
Do you take 78s and shellac records?
Yes. I accept 78 RPM shellac records. They are fragile and heavy, so if you have a large collection of 78s, I will bring appropriate packing. Vintage 78s, especially jazz, blues, and early country, can have real collector value.
Can I donate a turntable along with my records?
I do not typically take equipment, but if you are donating a large record collection and want to include the turntable, I will usually take it along. Mention it when you call and I will figure it out.
