Hardcover fiction donations get evaluated category-by-category at NMLP's warehouse sort. The right routing depends on edition, condition, and demand:
- Recent hardcover bestsellers (last 5 years) — strong online resale on Amazon and eBay; condition needs to be solid for resale routing, but reading-condition copies route to LFL stewards and senior care facilities.
- Modern firsts of major authors — Hillerman first printings, McCarthy Knopf firsts, Anaya Quinto Sol first edition, Silko Ceremony Viking firsts — get separated for the SellBooksABQ sister site or referred to auction houses.
- Vintage hardcovers (pre-1970, with dust jacket) — evaluated for collector value before routing.
- Book club editions and reader's digest condensed — typically don't have resale value, route to recycling or LFL where appropriate.
- Library discards and ex-library hardcovers — accepted, routed to recycling unless category-fit for an LFL or care facility.
If you have a single hardcover that you suspect is a true first edition (signed, scarce, regionally significant), text a photo of the copyright page and dust jacket to 702-496-4214 for a free 24-hour evaluation before donating — see what's my library worth for the self-service triage tool.
