Why Donate Your Manga and Comic Books?

Comic books and manga are gateway reads for many people, especially young readers exploring new worlds and discovering the joy of storytelling. When you donate your collection, you're giving someone else the chance to experience those same adventures. Manga in particular has exploded in popularity, and many readers go through volumes quickly before moving on to new series.

Rather than letting these books collect dust or end up in a landfill, your donation keeps them in readers' hands. I give books a second life through resale and free distribution, connecting them with people who will actually read and enjoy them.

What I Accept

  • Manga series in any language (Japanese, English, etc.)
  • Single comic books and comic book series
  • Graphic novels and illustrated novels
  • Comic collections in any condition
  • Mixed collections (even if you have manga alongside other book genres)

Damaged spines? Water damage? Missing pages? I accept it all. Your books don't need to be in pristine condition.

Learn More About Donating

Albuquerque's Comic and Manga Community

Albuquerque has a thriving comic and manga community, which makes it a great place to donate these books. Unlike some smaller cities where comic shops are scarce, I have several places where fans gather, buy, and trade.

Local Comic Shops: Albuquerque has independent comic shops scattered throughout the city that buy used collections, host events, and connect fans. These shops often buy from locals directly, so if you have a particularly valuable collection, it's worth checking them out first. That said, they can only take what they know they can resell, which means common issues and bulk collections often end up with me instead.

Comic Conventions: Albuquerque Comic Con and other local events bring together dealers, collectors, and fans multiple times per year. These are good venues if you want to sell valuable single issues or vintage runs. But for bulk donations and common series, a quick drop-off at NMLP is easier than trying to find booth space or negotiate with dealers.

Online Communities: Local Facebook groups and Reddit communities connect Albuquerque manga and comic fans. These groups sometimes facilitate trades and sales, though shipping logistics can be complicated. For getting books out of your house quickly, my donation process is simpler.

Which Manga Series Have Collector Value?

Not all manga is created equal in terms of resale value. Some series are abundant and worthless; others have real market demand and retain value.

High-value manga: Complete, unbroken sets of older, established series—particularly shounen series like Dragon Ball, Naruto, or Bleach when they're complete—have value. First editions and Japanese imports sometimes command premiums. Manga that's gone out of print or is hard to find still sells. Rare editions or box sets with special packaging retain value.

Common/low-value manga: The bulk of manga published in English in the last 10 years is abundant and cheap. If the series is still in print and easily available at retail, your used copy isn't worth much. Shoujo romance series, light novels, and trendy recent manga that everyone owned often have minimal resale value.

Condition matters: A complete first-edition run of Fullmetal Alchemist in perfect condition might be worth mid-range collectible prices total. The same series with bent spines, creases, and fading? Maybe modest value. Condition is everything for collectible manga. If your copies are heavily read and loved (which is great—books should be read!), the resale value is minimal.

If you genuinely think you have valuable manga, reach out to local comic shops first. They can evaluate and make offers. Most manga collections, however, end up with me for simple, hassle-free donation.

How I Handle Graphic Novels vs. Single Issues

There's a difference between graphic novels (bound collections) and single-issue comic books (individual magazine-style issues), and I process both the same way.

Graphic novels: These are easier to store, display, and resell. They're shelf-ready and don't require special organization. When someone donates a stack of graphic novels, I sort them by title and condition, and they go into my circulation quickly. Graphic novels sell better than single issues because they're complete stories in one package.

Single issues: Comic book single issues (those thin magazine-style books numbered #1, #2, #3) are harder to sell as donations because most resellers want complete runs, not random issues. Someone might want issues 1-12 of a series but not issue 7 alone. Loose single issues often get bundled together and sold cheap or recycled if they can't be matched to runs.

Valuable singles: First issues and rare variant covers can be valuable, but only if they're in good condition and documented properly. A random issue #15 from 1995? Probably worthless. First appearance of a major character or a signed copy? Could be valuable. If you have single issues you think might be valuable, separate them from bulk donations and mention them when you call for pickup—I can evaluate them properly.

Mixed donations: It's totally fine to donate a mix of graphic novels, single issues, and manga all together. I sort everything and handle each format appropriately. No need to organize them yourself.
