## Is this the true first?
UK Allen & Unwin is the true first. The US Houghton Mifflin edition (October 1954) followed; its earliest impressions were made up from sheets printed in Great Britain by Allen & Unwin, so the UK issue has priority. For a first-edition set every volume must be a first impression, and sets are frequently mismatched.

## Telling it from reprints & book-club editions
Because the type was distributed after the first printing, the second impression (December 1954, 2,500 copies) is a complete resetting rather than a corrected reprint, differing from the first in numerous small settings; it and all later impressions are noted on the copyright page.
