Chilton (better known as an automotive-manual publisher) issued the true first; it precedes the UK Gollancz first (1966). The first printing was small -- commonly cited at roughly 2,200 copies, though figures in the sources vary (some give just over 3,000) -- making the true first one of the scarcest modern SF firsts. Signed copies are especially sought after.

## Telling it from reprints & book-club editions
The Science Fiction Book Club edition is the constant trap. Most reliable tells: the SFBC copy carries a small blind-stamped dot or square on the rear board AND a stamped alphanumeric gutter code at the foot of the final text page -- the true Chilton first has NEITHER, and the true first's jacket shows the printed price on the front flap (book-club jackets are price-clipped or carry a code). IMPORTANT: 'First Edition' on the copyright page is NOT by itself proof -- some book-club copies retain that statement -- so rely on the priced jacket and the absence of a gutter code, not on the 'First Edition' line alone.
